A special POCSO court in Yupia near Itanagar has sentenced two convicts to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor about seven years ago.

The minor, also a victim of child marriage, was of 14-16 years of age (as opined by the medical board then) when the crime was committed in 2015.

The girl, who was married to one Heri Takia, under Sangram police station in Kra Daadi district, was “constantly tortured and repeatedly raped” by his sons – Heri Kyai and Heri Tachu.

Before the FIR being lodged by the survivor on September 5, 2015 with the Itanagar Women Police Station, convict Heri Tachu had brought her from Joru village to his Itanagar residence where he used to rape her.

“Due to unbearable torture, she somehow managed to escape from his house with the help of one unknown person and reported the crime at Women Police Station Itanagar,” the police said.

“After thorough investigation involving six witnesses, charges were framed against the accused,” a senior police officer said.

He said the judgment was pronounced in the open court on August 1 and the conviction order passed on August 17. The court ordered that the survivor of the crime be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh “in accordance with Section 375-A and Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Rules, 2011”, besides the fine of Rs 5,000 imposed upon the convict shall be paid to the survivor.
