Festive fervour grips the city as puja revellers throng the streets of Agartala and the major towns on September 29 night – two days ahead of the beginning of Durga puja after the formal opening of major pandals by chief minister Manik Saha.

The major shops were open till late at night and re-opened early in the morning to facilitate puja shopping at the last moment. Tripura police had to increase their deployment from September 29 evening with the crowd in the puja pandals and in the shopping areas.

According to the Tripura merchant association, after a gap of two years due to COVID-19, this time a large number of people came to Agartala for shopping from North and South Tripura districts rushed to Agartala, which increased the business manifolds and crowd in the city as well. Several Puja organizers opened the pandals for devotees and the entire city has been illuminated for the last three days.

The Bharat Ratna Sangha, near Agartala airport, witnessed the biggest crowd on September 29 night when devotees rushed to see the Durga puja pandal made by replicating the iconic Meenakshi Devi shrine in Madurai. The crowd assembled well in advance to see the replica of Burj Khalifa at Deshbandhu Chittaranjan club, Vaishno Devi temple at Lal Bahadur Club and Tripura Sundari looks of Devi Durga in Prantik Club of the city.

Meanwhile, additional inspector general of police (AIGP) Jyotisman Das Chaudhuri said they have made adequate police arrangements to ensure peace during the ensuing festival where as many as 2506 numbers of community Durga Puja are being organized all over the state including 436 in Agartala.

Tripura police has already started taking preventive actions against anti-social elements, checking vulnerable places, and conducting special drives for traffic enforcement besides installing additional 99 CC cameras.

The special anti-narcotics drive has been launched across the state as a pre-puja security measure and seized 8630 kg cannabis, 187 gm heroin, 8946 bottles of contraband cough syrup, and 49824 Yaba tablets from various locations.
