Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on December 19 said that there is a possibility that National People’s Party (NPP) will get an absolute majority in the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

“… it is possible that after 50 years again there will be a political party (NPP) that will get single majority in the assembly,” Sangma said at a public gathering where two former Congress legislators Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and Mohendro Rapsang were inducting into NPP.

Lyngdoh and Rapsang, who were suspended for anti-party activities resigned from the assembly and joined the NPP.

“It is possible (to get an absolute majority) and it is this hope and this possibility that has brought each one of us together out here,” the NPP national president said, adding that the duo have joined the NPP with the hope, dream and vision to take Meghalaya to new heights.

“We can always make it possible if we can hold our hands together and say we will work as a team to take our state forward,” Conrad Sangma said.

Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong also voiced confidence that NPP will get an absolute majority in the upcoming assembly elections.

“Our fight start from tonight and we should come out with flying colours. The APHLC (All Party Hill Leaders Conference) was the only party in Meghalaya which got an absolute majority with 32 seats was in 1972. We will create a new record by hook or crook to get an absolute majority despite criticism from other political parties,” Tynsong said.
