Fire destroyed a bicycle warehouse and five shops in Imphal's New Checkon Bazar

A massive fire broke out at Imphal’s New Checkon Bazaar late on November 29 night, gutting at least five shops and a bicycle warehouse, officials said on November 30.

No human casualty was reported. However, properties worth over crores of rupees were reduced to ashes, the officials also said.

The fire broke out around midnight and fire tenders from Imphal fire service station immediately rushed to the spot. The firefighters toiled for nearly five hours to douse the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not known yet. Officials, however, suspected the fire broke out from an electric short-circuit at the warehouse.

The officials said that almost all the bicycles and some motor-bikes stored in the warehouse were damaged extensive by the inferno. They estimated the damaged properties in the warehouse alone at over Rs 1 crore.

All the five shops dealing with second-hand clothes standing in rows adjacent to the warehouse were also destroyed by the inferno.

Almost all the clothes stored in the shops were also reduced to ashes. Two of the shopkeepers claimed to be destroying second-hand clothes destroyed by the fire at over Rs 7 lakh each.

Other shopkeepers were not immediately available for their comments.
