In a gruesome incident, two minors were charred to death on January 10 night in a fire that gutted a makeshift wooden house near Shillong, Meghalaya police said on January 11.

“Two separate human remains were recovered by the forensic unit from the site and it has been ascertained that the remains were of two children – a five-year-old girl and three year and a half year old boy,” Raghavendra Kumar MG, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.

The mother of the two children was out of the house to fetch water and fainted after seeing the sudden fire at the top of the building where the five families were residing.

“We have registered a case and investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,” the police said.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has termed the incident as “very tragic” and assured government’s support in every possible way.
