At least 30 houses were gutted in a fire incident at Hatigaon in Guwahati late evening on February 23.

At around 10.15 pm, a major fire broke out at a campus housing around 30 families on Ajanta Path in Hatigaon area of Guwahati, resulting in the destruction of many make-shift rented houses.

Police was yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. However, locals suspect electric short circuit which led to the inferno.

Reports stated that no injuries or fatalities were sustained as a result of the fire incident, however, properties worth lakhs were damaged.

Eyewitnesses stated that they heard the sound of explosion involving LPG cylinders as well.

In the meantime, fire trucks arrived at the scene and controlled the fire.

A pal of gloom surrounded the area on February 24 morning as locals visited the area to witness the damage caused by the fire. Eyewitnesses said that the fire was such intense that the families could not even get a chance to secure their belongings – including documents and other valuables.

The affected families are mostly daily wage labourers living in rented accommodation.
