Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said the present generation should remember and honour the sacrifices made by their great forefathers for defending the freedom of the motherland.
Speaking at the 173rd death anniversary of King Nara Singh at Kangla on April 11, the chief minister expressed concern over the present generation seeming to forget the contribution of their forefathers. Instead, many youths are getting addicted to drugs and intoxicants in the name of modern Manipur.
Biren Singh offered a floral tribute to Nara Singh’s portrait.
The CM said his government acknowledged the heroic efforts of Maharaj Nara Singh and Herachandra in driving the Burmese away to end the Seven Years’ Devastation in 1826, by installing their statues beside the statue of Maharaj Gambhir Singh at Canchipur. Apart from this, a bigger statue of Maharaj Nara Singh had also been installed in front of the Kangla Western Gate.
Besides, he added that the installation of another statue of Maharaj Nara Singh at Moreh near the Ningthi River had been completed and would be inaugurated soon.
