Reacting to the controversial statement made by Assam legislative assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary regarding the rise in electricity bills, opposition Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha staged a protest on June 6. He was seen sitting under a tree near the Assam legislative assembly speaker’s official residence inside the state assembly premises in Guwahati.

The statement by Biswajit Daimary had advised the common people of the state that if they are struggling to pay their electricity bills, they can find an alternative by sitting under trees instead of using fans to reduce their electricity consumption.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha strongly criticized the speaker for his remarks, stating that he staged the protest on behalf of the common people of the state. He expressed his disapproval of the advice given by the speaker, especially considering the soaring mercury levels and the increasing electricity bills faced by the people. He emphasized that it is totally unacceptable.

The Congress MLA went on to condemn not only the speaker but also the state BJP president for advising people to eat less to control the rising prices of essential commodities and vegetables. He expressed deep concern over the lack of effective measures taken by the state government to control the price hike.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha further mentioned that his party would organize agitation against the Assam government’s failure to address the issue of price hike.
