The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) held a protest in Guwahati against the Assam government’s decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics from class 6. The students’ organization had earlier declared a month-long agitation across the state in opposition to this decision.

Samujjal Bhattacharjya, chief advisor of AASU, expressed that the government’s decision is against the vernacular language and announced the month-long agitation program in response. As part of the agitation, a Gana Satyagraha was staged in Guwahati. Bhattacharya mentioned that the decision was made jointly after discussions with the All Bodo Students’ Union, Asam Sahitya Sabha, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, teachers’ association, tribal Sahitya Sabha, and various tribal organizations. The decisions were conveyed to the government, which called for discussions but failed to provide a satisfactory solution. Instead, the government proceeded with the distribution of textbooks without responding positively.

Bhattacharya emphasized that the Assam government’s actions have compelled the students’ union to resort to agitation. He stated that they do not wish for agitation but are left with no choice. They seek a solution to the issue, and hence, they are engaging in non-violent agitation.

The AASU leaders affirmed that the agitation will continue until the government withdraws its decision.
