Senior journalist from Assam, Manjit Mahanta, passed away on July 10. He was 55.
Mahanta breathed his last at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati at around 2 am on July 10.
A renowned journalist, Manjit Mahanta was also member of the Indian National Congress. He was the chairperson of the media department at the Assam unit of the party.
He was an alumnus of B Borooah College in Guwahati from where he completed his BA in 1987. Mahanta unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Assam assembly elections from Dispur constituency on a Congress ticket.
Known for his contributions to both journalism and politics, Mahanta was suffering from multiple ailments.
The last rites of Mahanta will be conducted at Navagraha. Before that, his mortal remains were brought at the Gauhati Press Club.
Reacting to the news, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee tweeted: “With a heavy heart we announce that APCC Media Department Chairman @_ManjitMahanta dangoria left for his heavenly abode. Our heartfelt condolences to his family & near ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
Several journalists, politicians and others condoled the death of Mahanta.
Guwahati-based senior journalist Prasanta Rajguru tweeted: “With the sudden death of Manjit Mahanta, I have lost one of my greatest friends. We started our life as journalist together. In our reporting days we were always together in any event or incidents. Advocate Niloy dutta called us Jai Bijay. Mon, u left so early, can’t believe.”
