Botanical Garden in old jail premises of Guwahati inaugurated

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 1 inaugurated the Botanical Garden, which has been newly developed on the old jail premises at Fancy Bazar area in Guwahati for Rs 58 crore.

On August 17 in 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of the garden. The project was executed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The work on the project of the garden started on January 19 in 2022.

The Assam government has given more importance to the botanical gardens as compared to the park. This garden will be known as a beautiful botanical garden in the next two years, Sarma remarked.

There are 250 different plant varieties encompassing shrubs, climbers, various types of bamboo, palm plants, aquatic plants, orchids, ferns, scented plants, herbal plants and more.

A large number of CCTV cameras have been installed in the garden. The garden is also decorated with colourful lights. There is also a special play area for children in the garden.

The garden covered 30 bighas of land of the old jail. There have been constructed two ponds and a yoga centre on the old jail premises.

Minister of housing and urban affairs Ashok Singhal and Gauhati MP Queen Oja attended the meeting.
