Assam continued their impressive performance following an initial setback, securing a 2-0 victory over Arunachal Pradesh in a Group A match of the 77th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy 2023-24, held at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Itanagar, on February 25.

Dipu Mirdha displayed exceptional skill, giving Assam the lead in the 7th minute. Despite numerous opportunities, neither side managed to find the back of the net for the remainder of the match, played under the evening lights. However, in the dying moments of the game, Akrang Narzary (90+4th) sealed the victory with a second goal for Assam.

The match also saw a total of four yellow cards distributed, with Chawjung Chithan and Akash Taw of Arunachal Pradesh, as well as Dipu Mirdha and Joydeep Gogoi of Assam, receiving warnings.

In their previous match on February 23, Assam pulled off a surprising 2-1 victory against Meghalaya. Assam’s next challenge will be against Services on February 28 in a morning match scheduled for 10 am.

A total of 12 teams are competing in the final rounds of the Santosh Trophy, with Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Goa, Assam, Services, and Kerala forming Group A, while Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, Manipur, Mizoram, and Railways comprise Group B.

This edition of the Santosh Trophy marks the first time the tournament is being hosted in Arunachal Pradesh.
