21 held in pre-matric scholarship scam in Assam

Altogether 21 people, including school headmasters, were arrested by Assam Police CID since November 8 for their alleged involvement in a pre-matric scholarship scam.

IGP (CID) Surender Kumar said in Guwahati on November 9 that the CID had registered a case of alleged irregularities in pre-matric scholarships for students of minority communities, sponsored and implemented by Ministry of Minority Affairs, for 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The case was registered on the basis of an FIR filed by the director of Assam Minority Welfare Board, who is also the nodal officer for the scholarship programme, in August this year.

A deputy SP level officer of the CID led a team in investigating the case and based on evidence collected, 21 people were arrested from, different parts of Kamrup, Darrang, Goalpara and Dhubri, since November 8 evening.

Among those arrested are four school headmasters, one president of school management committee and 10 middlemen.

Laptops and incriminating documents were also seized during a raid conducted in the case.

Kumar said investigation into case is going on.
