A 68-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after he was declared as foreigner by a court in Assam’s Kamrup district.

Locals claimed that, the man was under distress after his name had not appeared in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) that was published on August 31. The final NRC in Assam left out over 19 lakh applicants.

The incident took place at Champupara village located in Goroimari Tehsil of Kamrup district on Sunday.

The man, identified as Jangsher Ali, reportedly drank poison on Saturday night.

Locals said that, recently, the Foreigners’ Tribunal had declared him as a foreigner.

“From 1977 to 1997, his name was included in the voter lists as Jangsher Ali, but his name was changed in the voter lists from 2005 as Dashar Ali. Since then, he visited the court to prove himself as Indian citizen. But the court declared him as a foreigner. He committed suicide by drinking poison,” a local resident said.
