Assam on July 6 reported 786 fresh COVID-19 cases with Guwahati reporting as many as 598 of them.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed through a tweet late in the night that the new cases in the past 24 hours have taken the total number of active cases in the state to 4623.

The state now has reported a total of 12,522 cases out of which 7882 have recovered and were released from the hospitals and COVID Care Centres.

Sarma appealed to the people to follow social distancing, wear masks and maintain hygiene.

Earlier on July 6, 449 patients were discharged from the hospitals and COVID Care Centres in Assam after they recovered from the disease.

Sarma had said that while the number of fresh cases is increasing, the state has been able to maintain a good recovery rate as more patients are being discharged.

Guwahati has been witnessing a surge in number of COVID-19 cases because of community level transmission in the last few days. The state government imposed a 14-day total lockdown in the city to contain the virus spread since June 29.

Certain relaxations were given from July 6 amid the lockdown to allow citizens to buy necessary items.
