83 killed in lightning in Bihar

In one of the highest casualties in a single day in Bihar due to lightning, a total of 83 people lost their lives in separate incidents across the state on June 25.

Officials in the Disaster Management department said that a total of 83 people lost their lives in lightning in various districts across the state. Highest number of 13 casualties was reported from Gopalganj, followed by 8 each in Nawada and Madhubani, 6 each in Siwan and Bhagalpur.

Five persons each lost their lives in Darbhanga, East Chamapran and Banka, 3 each in Kishanganj and Aurangabad. Two people each lost their lives in West Champaran, Jehanabad, Jamui, Purnea, Kishanganj, Supaul, Buxar and Kaimur. One casualty each was reported from Samastipur, Sheohar, Saran and Madhepura districts.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed shock over the deaths. He announced for payment of Rs 4 lakhs each to family members of those killed in lightning.

Kumar appealed to people to remain indoors in inclement weather. He also suggested them to follow advice of Disaster Management department to protect themselves from lightning.

Meanwhile, Meteorological department predicted heavy downpour in several districts of North Bihar.
