The flood situation is getting worse day by day in the monsoon-hit Assam and Meghalaya. Nine persons, including six children, died in the last 24 hours.
Heavy rains swept away homes and landslides cut off key highways connecting several states in the flood-hit region.
At least five persons, including four children and a woman, died in Meghalaya, while two siblings, both minors, were crushed to death in a landslide in Assam’s Goalpara.
Reeling under heavy rains for the past few months, the overall death toll in floods and landslides this year in the Northeast rose to 50 with the latest deaths.
As per the central water commission bulletin on June 17 morning, rivers namely Kopili (at Kampur, Nagaon) is flowing above high flood level; Brahmaputra (at Neamatighat, Jorhat, at Dhubri); Puthimari (at NH Road crossing, Kamrup); Pagaladiya (at NT Road crossing, Nalbari); Jia-Bharali (at NH Road crossing, Sonitpur); Manas (at NH Road crossing, Barpeta); Beki (at road bridge, Barpeta) is flowing above the danger level.
In the last 24 hours, altogether 25 districts – Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Karbi Anglong West, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur and Udalguri district have reported flood.
In Assam, about 11,09,300 people were impacted, out of which 68,331 people are taking shelters in 150 relief camps. Relief materials were also distributed to other affected populations who are not taking shelters in relief camps through 46 nos. of relief distribution centres opened temporarily.
