Implementation of Aadhaar cards in Assam will start full swing from mid-October as authorities are geared up for the enrollment procedure.
State registrar, general administration department (GAD) has shortlisted 6 firms for the enrolment process which got delayed from the initial target of August, 2018.
“These firms have already been handed over the official work orders on September 1 for supplying Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) certified machine and operational kits along with one skilled operator per Aadhaar Enrolment Centre on monthly rental basis. The machines will be made available at 1,241 centres spreading across 33 districts of Assam,” said M Angamuthu, commissioner and secretary of GAD.
It is expected that the firms will take around 1 year to complete the task assigned to them for 3.16 crore residents of the state who are yet to receive Aadhaar card. Out of 3.4 crore estimated population, only 24 lakh are enrolled for Aadhaar.
Angamuthu said that the entire state has been divided into 10 zones for the project.
“The GAD has already identified 1,241 enrollment centres in the state. The UIDAI would be providing fund for the cost of generation of Aadhaar cards for the residents through the registrar and the other expenses like consumables and stationary items among others for the enrollment centres would be borne by the GA department,” he said.
The deputy commissioners (DC) would be the enrollment agency under whose direct supervision the Aadhaar implementation work would be carried out.
The UIDAI issues a 12-digit number called Aadhaar to Indian residents. The Aadhaar enrollment application form would be provided to the residents at the enrollment centres.
However, the form can be downloaded online from UIDAI website or by visiting nearest Aadhaar enrollment centres, banks or post offices as well. Once the application has been submitted, Aadhaar can be downloaded online after 10-12 days from the date of submission of application.
Aadhaar is considered a proof of residence and not a proof of citizenship. The residents who come to the Aadhaar enrollment centres are required to submit original documents of proof of address, proof of date of birth and proof of residence among others at the time of submitting applications. Biometric details, along with photographs, will be taken by the enrollment officer during the process.
