The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on April 7 distanced itself from the comments of its MLA Aminul Islam, who has been arrested by Assam Police on allegations of making communal remarks over the spread of novel coronovirus.

In a statement, an AIUDF spokesperson said the party does not endorse the statement made by Islam and it was made in his personal capacity.

The spokesperson said as the country is going through a crisis, it is not the time to make controversial or inflammatory statements.

“The matter is before the law now and law will take its own course. We have faith in our legal system,” he said, adding, “Many legislators, MPs and even ministers had made objectionable statements in the past. We hope that they will also be brought under the purview of the law”.

Aminul Islam, Opposition AIUDF’s legislator from Dhing in Nagaon district, was arrested in Nagaon on April 7 over his purported communal remarks over detection of COVID 19 positive in returnees from Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi.

Altogether 27 COVID 19 patients have been detected in the state so far, out of which 26 have links with the religious congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz.
