NIA court clears Akhil Gogoi from all UAPA cases against him, to walk out of jail

Jailed Assam legislator and farmer leader Akhil Gogoi was cleared from the third Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case which was registered against him at Chandmari Police Station on July 1.

A special NIA Court in Guwahati cleared all charges against the Raijor Dal leader and three others on July 1. The court dismissed all charges by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Gogoi is expected to come out of jail soon. He is lodged at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati where he is undergoing treatment.

Akhil Gogoi has been behind the bars since December of 2019 under the UAPA. He was arrested in December 2019 when Assam witnessed huge protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Founder of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a peasants’ rights organisation, Gogoi has 52 criminal cases registered against him which was the highest among all the candidates contesting the 2021 Assam elections. However, he has not been convicted in any one of these.
