The Assam cabinet has approved the Cow Protection Bill to bring it in the assembly. The bill is likely to be placed in the next budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly which will begin from July 12.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on July 8, Assam parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika said that the cabinet meet was held on July 7 which was chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and it approved to bring the Cow Protection Bill in the assembly.
“We had earlier announced that we will bring the Cow Protection Bill. Yesterday, Assam cabinet has approved to bring the bill in the assembly,” Pijush Hazarika said.
Earlier, Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi said that the state government will bring the Cow Protection Bill.
Addressing the inaugural session of 15th Assam Legislative Assembly, the Assam governor said: “We will adopt a zero-tolerance policy and enforce stringent punishment for the offenders.”
“We all revere and worship cows. It is considered a sacred animal as it nurtures us through life sustaining milk. In fact, it is a symbol of the divine bounty of earth. I am happy to inform you that my government plans to introduce the Cow Protection Bill in the next assembly session. The proposed bill envisages imposition of complete ban on transport of cattle outside the state. Once passed, Assam will join other states of the country who have passed similar bills,” Assam governor Mukhi had said.
On the other hand, the Assam cabinet also decided to rename Gaoburhas (village headman) as Gaon Pradhans, to allocate 180 bighas of land to Dhalpur Shiv temple in Sipajhar, to start online registration at employment exchange instead of current manual process.
The Assam cabinet also approved to bring a bill to set up a new sports university in the state.
