Assam CM requests Nagaland to reopen borders

Sarbananda Sonowal NRC appeal – The News Mill

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 23 requested his Nagaland counterpart Neiphiu Rio to open the state’s border with Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, which have been sealed off by Nagaland following detection of a COVID-19 patient at Sonari in Assam recently.

Sonowal had a telephonic interaction with Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and requested him to reopen the inter-state border adjoining Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.

Sonowal urged the Nagaland chief minister to put in joint efforts to fight COVID-19 pandemic.

He said while fighting against the virus, there is also a need to continue economic activities unhindered. Due to sealing of the inter-state border by the Nagaland government, the livelihood of workers engaged in tea gardens of the border areas are adversely affected, Sonowal said.

Besides, the labour force working in stone quarries and movement of construction materials has also been negatively impacted.

Stating this, Sonowal requested his Nagaland counterpart to take expeditious measures to reopen the border so that economic activities could be carried out without any disruption.

Responding to Sonowal’s request, Rio assured him to positivity look into the request and to take necessary steps to reopen the border.
