The flood situation continued to worsen in Assam as the death toll rose to 66 while the number of affected population crossed 35 lakh in the state.

As many as seven deaths were reported from different parts in the last 24 hours, including three from Morigaon district, and two from Barpeta, taking the overall toll to 66, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin said in the evening on July 15.

The total population affected reached 35,73,564 on July 15 evening, increasing by nearly three lakhs since July 14, with Sonitpur, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, South Salmara, Kamrup, Morigaon and Golaghat being among the worst-hit districts.

The number of affected districts has, however, come down to 26 on July 15 from 28 a day before, in which people in 93 revenue circles and 3376 villages and localities have been affected.

As many as 249 relief camps and over 380 relief distribution centres are running in the state, with over 36,000 people taking shelter in the camps.

Six major rivers of the state are flowing over the danger level, including the Brahmaputra at five places and the Kopili at two places.

Personnel of NDRF and SDRF are assisting the local civil and police administrations in rescue and relief operations.

The number of animals claimed by floods has increased to 66, while another 117 have been rescued so far.

Out of 223 forest camps, 153 have been affected and 14 have been vacated due to the floods.

Several camps in Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary have also been inundated and vacated, while large tracts of these protected wildlife habitats have been submerged.
