Assam Governor calls for review of NEC’s success

PB Acharya – The News Mill

Governor of Assam and Nagaland, P B Acharya said that the North Eastern Council (NEC) is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the eight States of the North East, viz., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim and that it was established in 1971.

The Governor stressed that it was time to review how far we have reached in achieving our goals through the NEC over the last thirty five years. “We should consider,” he said, “Whether it was time to add or supplement new roadmaps or new voluntary organised institutions to strengthen our networks of development.”

“There are,” the Governor added, “Many experienced human resource groups like N.S.S., Ex-Servicemen’s Associations, Senior Citizens’ Organisations, Sahitya Sabhas, Universities and University Students’ Organisations which can be the nodal agents to identify and reach our targeted beneficiaries.”

“I value the contributions of NEC in motivating and participating in the development of the North Eastern region which has plenty of natural resources and manpower. Whether NEC can address the issue of the development of the North East’s resources by itself should be explored.”

Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Nurses Day, Acharya has highly praised the services of nurses.

International Nurses Day is an international day celebrated around the world on May 12 of each year, to mark the contributions nurses make to society.

In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

Calling it a noble profession, the Governor said that it was encouraging to find that many young women, even from tribal areas, are devoutly taking up the profession of nursing to help and aid the sick and the ailing.
