Assam govt may restore mobile internet by 3pm today: Gauhati HC
Mobile internet services in Assam will be restored at least from December 18 after it was banned on December 11 evening at across 10 districts of Assam due to widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Gauhati High Court on December 17 said that the Assam government may restore mobile internet ban from 3pm on December 17.
In its response, the government representative verbally said that they were already planning to restore the mobile internet services from December 18 onwards.
Assam was gripped by widespread protests against the controversial bill which was approved by the Parliament and later given the nod by the President.
Senior Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 16 had said that the government has found involvement of third parties in the violence after the protests which resulted in loss of public property. “We had to close down mobile internet services due to some trend in the way protests were moving. We have found that the social media was widely used to instigate the crowd and also propagate fake news,” he had said.
Meanwhile, broadband internet services were restored from December 17 morning.
