After a grand success of pugilist Lovlina Borgohain at the Tokyo Olympics, the Assam government has planned to spend Rs 1300 crore for infrastructure development in the sports sector in the state.

The Assam government has also changed its sport policy to encourage the athletes in the state.

Assam sports minister Bimal Borah said that, the state government has planned to spend Rs 1200-1300 crore for infrastructure development in the sports sector in the state.

“Apart from our state budget, we have also planned to invest funds from other sources in the sports sector. We have planned to invest around Rs 1200-1300 crore for infrastructure development in the sports sector,” Bimal Borah said.

The minister also said that, the state government has taken up various schemes for all round development in the sports sector.

“We have planned to construct 10 sports complexes in district level and the estimated cost for each sports complex will be around Rs 50 crore. We have also identified 40 assembly constituencies to develop sports infrastructure in block level. For that, we will spend Rs 12 crore in each constituency,” Bimal Borah said.

He further said that, the current state government has changed the state sports policy to encourage the athletes of the state and implemented it.

“Under the new state sports policy, our government will give Class 1 government job to the Olympics, Asian Games, World Championship medallist. Apart from it, our government has announced to give government job to the athlete of the state who will win any medal in National Games,” the Assam sports minister said.

Bimal Borah further said that, all the projects taken by the state government will start shortly.

Assam finance minister Ajanta Neog said in her budget speech in the Assam assembly last month said that, the state government proposes to construct multi-disciplinary sports complexes in different parts of the state in a phased manner.

“The state government is also proposing 100 units of open-air gymnasium across the state. Village Olympics will be conducted at Gaon Panchayat, Block and District levels,” Ajanta Neog said in her state budget speech.
