The Assam government is using drones to map and demarcate around 700 villages in the state.
Reports said that the state government is using drone technology to prepare maps of around 700 villages which till now had no maps. The process will help in demarcating borders with other states in the region, a report in the Times of India said.
“There are around 22,724 villages in Assam, of which 700 had no maps so far and so posed hurdles in executing government projects and buying and selling of land. The project, assisted by the Survey of India, started this week at No. 1 Singimari village under Hajo revenue circle in lower Assam’s Kamrup district. Once the neighbouring states settle the inter-state border dispute with Assam, drones will also demarcate the borders of frontier villages once for all,” the TOI report said quoting unnamed ‘government sources’.
“Once the pilot project in Singimari is over, there will be a massive mapping exercise in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia where the target is to map about 600 revenue villages,” Pankaj Chakravarty, principal of Assam Survey & Settlement Training Centre was quoted as saying.
Kamrup DC Kailash Karthik N said that the exercise at Singimari will help in demarcation of the state borders once Assam and Meghalaya reach an agreement on the border issue.
Northeast India has been witnessing inter-state boundary disputes since the early 1960s when the process of carving out states from the undivided Assam commenced.
