The Assam government has decided to set up a wildlife safari-zoo at Dholai area in Cachar district at a cost of Rs 214.54 crore.
The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting chaired by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held at Haflong in Dima Hasao district on January 19.
“The Assam cabinet has today approved to setting up of Cachar Wildlife Safari-Zoo at Dholai, Cachar at a cost of Rs 214.54 crore. It will be an open zoo,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
“It will be an open zoo which means the animals will not be kept inside cages. Rather, the animals will roam inside the specific area of the zoo freely. Human beings who would visit the zoo will take the tour in closed vehicles,” Sarma said.
The area of the proposed site for the zoo will be around 200 hectares and it will be set up without destroying the flora therein.
Dholai in Cachar district is located 30 km towards south from district headquarters Silchar.
The Dholai assembly constituency is represented by Assam forest and environment minister Parimal Suklabaidya.
