Assam’s Tapan Kumar Deka who is known as the ‘crisis man’ was appointed as director of the intelligence bureau (IB) on June 24. He is the first Assamese IPS officer to be the chief of the IB.

Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988 batch Himachal Pradesh cadre IPS officer, was appointed director of IB for the tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

He will assume office on July 1 after the incumbent director Arvind Kumar’s tenure comes to an end on June 30.

Tapan Kumar Deka was put in charge of the counter-assaults during the 26/11 Mumbai attack. Deka has handled crucial cases like terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, especially targeted killings in the valley.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88), Special Director, Intelligence Bureau as Director, Intelligence Bureau vice Shri Arvinda Kumar, IPS (AM:84), upon completion of his tenure on June 30, 2022, for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier, by granting extension in service under the provisions of All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958,” the order reads.

Deka has spent most of his career in the intelligence bureau. He was an additional director in the intelligence bureau when he was promoted to the rank of special director in the wing in June last year.

Deka was born in Sarthebari in Assam’s Barpeta district. He started his early education in Tezpur before joining Cotton College. Then he completed his master’s degree in physics from Delhi University.

He also worked briefly as a lecturer at B Borooah College in Guwahati.
