The Athgaon Kabristan Masjid in Guwahati has been declared a COVID-19 containment zone after at least three positive cases in the state were linked to a meeting held at the mosque on March 12.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that at least three COVID-19 cases were traced to an event held at the mosque premises on March 12 where reportedly around 100 people took part.

“We came to know this morning that the two COVID-19 patients from Dhubri had stayed in the Athgaon Kabristan Masjid where an event was held on March 12. Also, the patient who died of the disease in Hailakandi today had also stayed at the masjid. Hence we took the decision to declare it as a containment zone and it is being sealed for 14 days,” Sarma said.

Declaring the mosque premises a containment zone means that no one will be allowed to enter or exit the place for the next 14 days. The government has promised that necessary food and related amenities will be provided to the people who are inside the premises.

Earlier, the state government had declared a posh apartment complex in Guwahati as a containment zone after a businessman living there was tested COVID-19 positive.
