Bhupen Hazarika

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal on September 9 announced that he will repair the house of late singer Bhupen Hazarika in Nagaon which is in a deplorable state.

Ajmal expressed his views on Twitter on September 9. “Saw the news about the dilapidated condition of Bharat Ratna Late Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s home at Kuthori. I have directed my team to visit the place at the earliest & make necessary arrangements for its repair. It would give me immense pleasure to contribute to its preservation,” Ajmal tweeted.

Bhupen Hazarika’s two-room house at Kuthori in Nagaon district was constructed on a plot of 20 bigha that he had bought in the 1960s. He used to take rest in the house when he travelled. Many of his creations were penned in this house.

Ajmal also slammed the Assam government for failing to keep its words.

“Assam govt, in September 2016, took a cabinet decision of converting the house at Kuthori into a heritage building. It’s very unfortunate that the govt didn’t take any measure to preserve the heritage house even after such a cabinet decision,” he further added in another tweet.

Bhupen Hazarika, known as Bard of Brahmaputra, is widely respected not just in Assam but across the country and in neighbouring Bangladesh. He was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019. Even before that he was honoured with Bangladesh’s highest civilian award – Muktijoddha Padak – posthumously in 2011. Hazarika died in November 2011 in Mumbai.
