Students of Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, arrested on charges of resorting to vandalism at a wedding venue in Jalukbari, were granted bail on Monday.

The Court of Sessions Judge, Guwahati granted bail to the AEC students ‘keeping in view the academic career of the accused’. The accused were allowed to go on bail against a bail amount of Rs 20,000 with two sureties of the like amount. They have been asked to report to the investigating officer once a week.

The AEC students were arrested by Guwahati police after they had allegedly resorted to cane charge and ransacking in a marriage ceremony in the vicinity of the college campus on February 20 after two of the students from the college had been allegedly beaten up by some persons from the marriage party.

A group of students from the boys’ Hostel Number 1 of the AEC allegedly ransacked furniture, broke glass panes of parked vehicles.
