Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on March 19 alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) betrayed the tea estate workers in Assam.

Campaigning for the party in Assam, Rahul Gandhi said that the BJP promised Rs 365 as daily wage to tea workers but paid only Rs 167. “I am not PM Narendra Modi and do not lie,” he said. Gandhi added that his party has promised five guarantees to the people of Assam ahead of the assembly elections.

Addressing tea estate workers at a meeting at Dinjoy in Dibrugarh, Gandhi promised Rs 365 daily wage for tea workers, action against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), five lakh jobs, 200 free units of electricity and Rs 2,000 to housewives in the state if his party forms the next government.

Seeking to woo the voters in the tea belt of Assam, Rahul Gandhi added that his party has taken feedback from the people while preparing the manifesto and thus came up with the five guarantees. “We understand your pain. This manifesto was not prepared in a closed room. We listened to you and we are now promising these five guarantees to the people of Assam,” Gandhi said.

The Congress leader said that his party will create a special ministry in Assam for the tea industry, encourage self-employment and open mobile health clinics in the state. ” I am an MP from Kerala. Tea labourers in Kerala get Rs 380 daily, but those in Assam are paid less. The central government gives the Guwahati airport to a millionaire and gives tea gardens to outsiders,” Gandhi added.
