The Congress party has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur is resorting to violence and is misusing government machinery to win the state assembly elections.

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Bhakta Charan Das on February 20 accused the BJP of resorting to violence in the run-up to the Manipur assembly polls and alleged that the state’s ruling party was “misusing” the government machinery to win the elections.

He charged the BJP with not allowing the election campaigns of Congress candidates and workers.

“Even at Heingang, the constituency of the chief minister (N Biren Singh), the election campaigns of our party were disturbed and party leaders and workers were threatened. The BJP is misusing the government machinery to win the elections,” he told a media conference.

The Congress leader took potshots at the BJP for not repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) despite being in power at the centre and the state. “BJP does not believe in development. That is why BJP is not interested in repealing it,” Das said.

Manipur goes to polls in two phases on February 28 and March 5. Counting of votes will be done on March 10.
