Trinamool Congress rally in Guwahati on April 27

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader, Mukul Sangma on April 27 cautioned the people against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Today, people have to identify and segregate those political parties who are disguised as Messiah to defend our interests,” Sangma said while speaking at a meeting in Guwahati to welcome several leaders from Assam to the AITC’s fold.

Also present were AITC MPs – Sushmita Dey and Mahua Moitra – and Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora.

Condemning the BJP’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he asked: “Is it not the intent of the BJP to ultimately bring an end to the Assam Accord?”

“It (Assam Accord) is nullified and diluted by the CAA,” Sangma alleged.

Explaining the monstrosity of CAA, the former Meghalaya chief minister said: “There is a difference between the NRC (an offshoot to implement Assam Accord) and the Citizenship Amendment Act. This issue is not confined to Assam. This brought ramifications to other small states. It includes all the eight Northeast states. Therefore, what happens in Assam draws invariably our attention. I often say that if Assam sneezes, the whole Northeast sneezes.”

In conclusion, Sangma said: “The strength that we draw from the huge diversity is under attack. We must fight back. We must demonstrate and send a strong message to the whole nation: when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. This is what Mamata Didi has demonstrated.”

Speaking on the occasion, newly-appointed Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora said that his party will not enter into an alliance with the Congress or the AIUDF.

“The TMC in Assam will not enter into an alliance with either the Congress or the AIUDF,” he said.

“Intellectuals, leaders and activists from various parties and common citizens have joined hands with TMC and resolved to work for the welfare of Assam,” he added.
