Coronation bridge blast

A blast was reported on the Coronation Bridge, which is also known as the Sevoke Bridge, in North Bengal on March 24 morning.

A video viral on the social media showed a vehicle blown up on the bridge.

Certain reports said that the “controlled” blast was part of a film shoot. However, netizens questioned the authorities as to how such a “stunt” could have been “allowed” on a heritage bridge which connects the entire Northeast India region with the rest of India.

Citing local sources, Ananda Bazar Patrika reported that smoke was seen from a vehicle on the Coronation Bridge on March 24 morning. Within a very short time, the vehicle exploded with a loud noise.

“Sevok and Mongpong police reached the spot after receiving the news. The cause of the explosion at the heritage bridge is being investigated. It is being investigated whether any of the bridge pillars were damaged due to the blast,” the report said.

EastMojo reported that no permission was taken for the film shoot. “According to initial reports, the blast was part of movie shoot, for which no prior permission was taken or granted,” superintendent of police, Kalimpong district, Aparajita Rai was quoted as saying in the report.

The Coronation Bridge is a heritage bridge across the Teesta River, connecting the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong in West Bengal. The bridge is a part of the National Highway 17 (old NH 31). The bridge was completed in 1941.
