Former world champion boxer L Sarita Devi on August 17 tested positive for COVID-19 along with her husband Thoiba Singh both of whom were in Imphal. They, however, were asymptomatic.

“I would like to announce that both of us (Thoiba and Sarita) just tested positive of COVID-19. Till this very moment there is no COVID-19 symptom on us. Those who were in close contact with us in the last one week or so, please isolate yourselves immediately and get tested. We shall overcome,” Thoiba wrote on Facebook.

Their son has been tested negative. Thoiba said that they have been taking all the precautions and didn’t know how they got infected.

“But hopefully, it is going to be all right. We will recover soon. I am just relieved that Tomthin (their son) has tested negative,” Thoiba was quoted as saying by media reports.

Sarita is an Asian Games bronze-winner, besides being a five-time Asian championships gold-medallist. The 38-year-old is the second boxer to test positive for the virus after the legendary Dingko Singh.

Dingko, an Asian Games gold-medallist, had recovered from the infection after enduring month-long hospitalisation. Sarita is one of the longest serving and among the most decorated women boxers of the country.
