A civilian was shot dead and at least nine others, including five Tripura policemen and a fire service employee, were injured in a scuffle between activists of Joint Movement Committee (JMC) and security forces on national highway at Chamtilla area of Panisagar in North Tripura on November 21.

The victim was identified as Sukanta Das (45), a carpenter of Dasda in Kanchanpur has joined the road blockade programme in Panisagar, against the state government plan to rehabilitate over 6000 displaced Brus of Mizoram, as part of JMC movement for past six days.

The protestors alleged that when a few thousand civilians, including students and youth, proceeded to Panisagar, security personnel prevented them, as sub divisional magistrate of Panisagar clamped 144 of CrPC on November 20 night. General strike crippled normal life in North Tripura

The indefinite general strike against resettlement of displaced Bru people from Mizoram in Kanchanpur and Panisagar of North Tripura has crippled normal life and hit the food stock for last six days.

District magistrate (North) Nagesh Kumar B urged JMC leaders and urged to withdraw the ongoing agitation to normalise the situation considering the sufferings of the people.

However, JMC did not respond to the call yet, after which security deployment has further been enhanced in entire area.

The opposition CPI-M and Congress in Tripura have urged the state government to initiate dialogue with JMC and resolve the deadlock while ruling BJP smells conspiracy of opposition CPI-M in the incident.
