At least five people, including three women, were killed and more than 30 others including children were injured when a bus they were travelling fell into a pond at Adabari in Nalbari district around 65 kilometres from Guwahati on Saturday afternoon

Police suspected that the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC)-run bus might have lost the control and fell off.

“So far, I can confirm five deaths. The injured ones have been rushed to the nearby hospitals. The rescue operation is going on with the help of police, administration and locals. It seems that the bus might have lost control and fell off. We are conducting an enquiry and we can come out with the exact reason once it’s completed,” Nalbari SP Shiladitya Chetia told The News Mill.

The bus was carrying around 45 people from Guwahati to Nalbari and the accident took place at around 3 pm.

Eye witnesses said that the portion of the road was in bad shape and uneven. “The road was in poor shape for quite some time. This can be a reason behind the accident,” said a local.
