Class XI Arunachal student wins innovation award at science centre

A class XI student from Arunachal Pradesh has won the Dinanath Pandey Smart Idea Innovation Award 2017 Innovation Festival at Regional Science Centre, Guwahati on Sunday.

Anang Tadar from New Galaxy Academy, Nirjuli, was honoured with the award for his attempt to make life better for the people with visual disabilities.

The device named G4B (Google for blind) is fixed in a pair of spectacles and with the help of an ultrasound sensor fitted in both side of the device which detects the obstacles on the left and the right.

“The infrared sensor in the centre is equipped for safety purposes. If the two ultrasound sensor fails to detect the obstacles in the front, then the infrared sensor will surely detect it. It works on the principle of echolocations used by bats. I’m glad to have won the award and I am thankful to my school for its support,” Tadar said after receiving the award.

Around 40 innovators, including artisans, from different parts of northeast states took part with their machines in the unique two-day festival which concluded on Sunday.

Tadar, who was involved in different innovative equipment since his childhood, said that one blind girl inspired him to think about the device. “One day while returning home from a temple, I saw a blind girl. I realized I was lucky to have seen the beautiful things around me. It was dusty all around. I realized even the dust seems to be a beauty as because I could see it. But that girl was so unfortunate. So, I decided to do something for them,” he said.

At present the device costs around Rs 29,000. Tadar is hopeful that it can be reduced if he gets help.

In the artisans section, experts from different fields like art, craft, music, pottery, bell metal, brass and sculpture among others took part in the event. The artisans showcased their unique creations connected with cultural heritage with live demonstrations for the visitors.
