Sikkim chief minister PS Tamang on October 20 said that he has been closely monitoring the situation caused by incessant rains resulting in landslides and damages in certain parts of the state.

“I am in constant touch with the line departments. In order to avoid any untoward incident, I appeal to all our citizens to refrain from travelling in these circumstances and pray for their safety,” CM Tamang said.

National Highway-10 connecting Sikkim with West Bengal and the rest of the country has been washed away at many points. Devastating rainfall has swept away 21 points on the lifeline of Sikkim. The supporting pillars of Rangpo bridge have been weakened as well.

“Avoid unnecessary travel,” is the advisory issued by district magistrate Ragul K. After inspecting the affected bridge he has restricted more than 10 ton vehicles from crossing the bridge. Repairs have started at certain points as the shooting boulders at other points have prevented moving earthmovers to clear the sliding mud.

While the South district faces more trouble, district magistrate M Bharni Kumar has promptly started a rescue operation for the affected residents. Food packets were given away to the needy.

Reports said that South, West, North and East have witnessed damage to houses, crops and internal link roads have also been blocked.
