A cloudburst on May 23 night wreaked havoc in several villages in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district, an official said on May 24.

No loss of life was reported so far and people are being evacuated to the highland areas following flashflood.

A State Disaster Response team has reached the site to take stock of the situation.
District Magistrate Ram Singh said several markets, educational institutions and private properties have been submerged under water.

“Heavy rainfall following cloudburst wreaked havoc in Raksamgre and Tikrikilla area causing flash flood and many villages between Nidanpur, Tikrikilla and Raksamgre are inundated with waters,” Singh told UNI over phone.

He informed that three bridges – two wooden and a concrete bridge – were washed away by the raging floodwaters.

“The Holaidonga road between Phulbari and Tikrikilla has been submerged under water with light vehicles finding difficult to drive,” Singh said, adding that Chibinang road also waterlogged, but vehicles can pass through with difficulty.

Singh said that people are advised to avoid travelling to those till further orders.
