CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates park and bridge at Nagaon

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 15 inaugurated a park in Nagaon to commemorate the 75th year of India’s independence.

The Amrit Kanon at Nagaon, built by Nagaon Municipality Board at a total cost of Rs 31 lakh, covers an area of 428 square metres.

The chief minister also inaugurated a bridge connecting Nagaon-Haibargaon near Nagaon Circuit House built under NABARD-RIDF-XXIV and ‘Mahavir Lachit Chilarai Setu Nirman Abhijan’.

The 118.84-meter bridge over Kolong River built with a total cost of Rs 12.35 crore will improve communication in Nagaon while easing traffic congestion.

Chief minister Sarma also attended the 109th Sadou Nagaon Bhogali Bihu Utsav. He said that the historic Bhogali Bihu celebrations in Nagaon have always strengthened the unity in the society. He also felicitated several people who have made significant contributions to the socio-cultural life and released a souvenir of Bhogali Bihu Utsav.

Later, the chief minister attended a programme at Nowgong College where he was felicitated for declaring Nowgong College as a state university. Saying that there is a long process of making a state university, he stated that the state government is striving to fulfil all infrastructure and academic requirements of Nowgong College for the purpose.

“This historic institute has been a pioneer of higher education in middle Assam since its inception in 1944 and it has produced quality human resource which has made significant contribution to the state and the country,” he said.

Urging all stakeholders of the prestigious institute to join hands with the state government for preparing an action plan to achieve the vision of making it a top-class university, the chief minister called for suggestions and ideas from within the academic community for deciding subjects and courses to be imparted here.

Local MLA Rupak Sarma, Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami, principal Nowgong College were also present at the programme.

Later, the chief minister inaugurated the construction work of Barhampur-Bamuni Road from National Highway 37 and Sokorigaon-Telia Pahukata Road at Barhampur under NABARD-RIDF-XXIII.
