Opposition Congress has alleged that BJP leaders and ministers have violated the lockdown norms of COVID-19 in Assam.

Leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia said that Jorhat MP Tapan Gogoi and state’s revenue and disaster management minister Jogen Mohan, among others, took part in a programme at Simaluguri in Sivasagar district on August 16.

“The programme of inaugurating a new building of Simaluguri town committee and street lights on Sunday (August 16) goes against the lockdown protocol issued by the state government. If the ministers, BJP leaders and government officials involved here don’t follow the orders, how can we expect the people in general to follow the instructions? This is unfortunate. I have already lodged my protest and submitted a memorandum to the district administration and informed the chief secretary,” Saikia said.

Saikia further said that he was not informed about the programme. “As a local MLA, I should have been informed about the programme but they didn’t do that. This indicates that they are doing politics,” he added.

As per norms, lockdown was to be enforced every Saturday and Sunday.

Earlier, Saikia also pointed at Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for violating the lockdown norms a couple of weeks ago.
