Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has appointed Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma as the state party president, media reports suggested on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old, who has been actively working for the Congress since 2008, replaced Birajit Sinha, a former minister and five-time legislator. Sinha was the Tripura Pradesh Congress president since January 2015.

Debbarma, whose father Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma and mother Bibhu Kumari Devi were Lok Sabha members for several terms, was quoted as saying by news agency IANS that he would constitute several committees and a state body at the earliest in consultation with Gandhi and other Central and state leaders.

“I would try my best to further rejuvenate the party in Tripura in unity with all senior and young leaders and party workers,” Debbarma was quoted as saying by IANS.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was in Guwahati to kick-start his Lok Sabha poll campaign in the Northeast by participating in a public rally.
