Congress urges poll panel to defer rural, urban local body elections in Arunachal

The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on November 10 urged the State Election Commission to hold the panchayat and municipal elections in Arunachal Pradesh next year.

In a representation submitted to the state election commissioner, the state unit of the Congress citing various reasons, including the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and upcoming Christmas, urged to conduct the panchayat and municipal elections in the state in the month of April/May, 2021.

“Conducting elections now is total violation of COVID-19 SoPs issued by the state and central government and it may also attract the Disaster Management Act. If the government wants to conduct the elections then it can be pushed further to the month of April and May 2021 (before monsoon season). These are the months with less festivity and by that time vaccine for COVID-19 will also arrive to ease the misery of humankind as promised by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the party said in its representation.

Chief minister Pema Khandu had last month hinted that rural and urban local body elections will be held soon.

The poll panel is yet to announce the schedule for the rural and urban local body polls.
