Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on January 18 was re-elected national president of the National People’s Party (NPP), which heads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government in the state.

Senior NPP legislator, Thomas Sangma, was also elected unopposed as the NPP national general secretary.

“I am humbled and grateful to be re-elected as national president of the National People’s Party. Thank all our party members for reaffirming their trust in my leadership. Each member has a significant role to play in our collective mission as a party. We are stronger together,” Conrad Sangma tweeted after being unanimously re-elected as the party president at the general body meeting of the NPP.

Conrad Sangma also released the NPP calendar for 2022, commemorating the 75th birth anniversary of his late father and veteran public leader Purno A Sangma, who was speaker of the Lok Sabha.

“His (PA Sangma’s) ideals will always inspire us to work for our people. It is on the foundation that he has laid that we continue to build,” Conrad Sangma tweeted in honour of his late father, who was the architect behind building up the NPP in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, NPP’s national spokesperson Abhaya Kashyap said the “party’s DNA” stands against criminalization of politics and especially against those who commit crime against women and children.

“The party’s DNA stands for clean politics and this is from the time of late PA Sangma who believed in clean politics,” Kashyap said.
