Coronavirus threat: Colleges come forward to prepare hand sanitizers

Educational institutions in Guwahati have come forward to stop the Coronavirus outbreak by preparing sanitizers in their laboratories and distributing them among the general public.

The Chemistry department at B Borooah College in Guwahati has prepared hand sanitizers which are being distributed internally.

On March 19, the Chemistry department at Cotton College also came forward to prepare hand sanitizers in their lab. Also, the Botany department at Pragjyotish College in Guwahati has come forward with their version of hand sanitizers.

The initiative taken by the colleges has been lauded by the netizens who said that sanitizers are running out of stock at the local medical stores.

“Colleges of Guwahati are doing us proud by preparing Hand sanitizers/Hand-rub formulations at their institutions. This is exactly the kind of initiative we need at the moment,” wrote Dhritishna Kalita in a Facebook post.

Among others, the Wildlife Genetics Laboratory of Aaranyak in Guwahati has also produced hand sanitizers for internal use and distribution. In a video, the NGO showcased how sanitizers can be made in a laboratory which is according to the standards recommended by the World Health Organization.

On March 19, a Telegraph report said that the Department of Botany and Chemistry at Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung, Nagaland, was also preparing hand sanitizers.

Kohima Science College is also working to produce hand sanitizers. “#KohimaScienceCollege working to produce hand sanitizers as per @WHO specifications. Necessity is the mother of invention – with every crisis also comes opportunities – an avenue for #MadeInNagaland product. Must commission a project (SIC),” adviser to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Abu Metha tweeted.
