Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on April 8 urged the people to maintain communal harmony while also following the lockdown and health department guidelines to contain COVID-19.
Sonowal, who toured the three southern districts in Barak Valley of the state, met religious leaders at Silchar of Cachar district and called upon everybody to rise in unison to deal with the extraordinary situation arising out of COVID-19 pandemic.
Sonowal said COVID-19 is caused by a novel strain of coronavirus which knows no religion, no community, no caste, no creed and no colour of skin.
He also said that in the face of no antidote or vaccine invented to treat the virus, physical distancing and avoidance of any kind of social gatherings are considered as the golden principle to fight the pandemic.
Sonowal stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for 21-day nationwide lockdown to enable the people across the country to remain indoor and beat the chain of infection induced by the virus. He, therefore, appealed to the religious leaders to impress upon their followers to remain indoor to evade any possibility of contacting viral infection. He also stated that no statement should be made which is fraught with religious overtones to strengthen the age-old harmonious co-existence in the state.
Earlier, the chief minister held a meeting with the district administration of Cachar and assessed the preparedness of the district administration to deal with the situation.
