Within 9 days of a batch of special tea being auctioned at record price of Rs 75,000 per kg at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), another lot equalled the record on August 21.

A batch of Golden Needles Tea, manufactured by Donyi Polo Tea Estate of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, sold for Rs 75,000 per kg at the GTAC. The tea was bought by Chattarsingh Narendrakumar – a Guwahati-based buyer – for Absolute Tea, who would be selling it online in their website.

Jayant Jalan of Absolute Tea said, “We bought Donyi Polo Golden Needles and World Championship winning tea from Halmari in the past few years, the response has been superb with people loving the tea. We expect a similar response this year.”

Manoj Kumar, Manager of Donyi Polo Tea Estate, thanked Swashat Dutta of Contemporary Brokers for marketing the tea.

Dinesh Bihani, Secretary, Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, said it was a positive trend for tea growers and indicated that quality tea had buyers.

The Golden Needles Tea of Donyi Polo Tea Estate has equalled the record set by Golden Butterfly Tea of Dikon Tea Estate of Assam, which was also auctioned for Rs 75,000 per kg at GTAC on August 13.

The ‘Golden butterfly’ had improved upon the last record of Rs 70,501 per kg, fetched by Maijan Golden Tips, also sold through GTAC on July 31 last.

The Maijan Golden Tips had, on the other hand, broken the day-old record set by Manohari Gold Tea, which was auctioned for Rs 50,000 per kg on July 30 at the GTAC.
